Fall Story Times This year our preschool reading program will begin on Tuesday September 23, 2008 at 10 am and meet for 6 weeks in the Alder Room, with Tammi Reimer as the storyteller. Dates for the Story Times are: Toddlers (children under the age of 3) should be accompanied by an adult. Children ages 3-5 may attend the story time programs alone. As in the past, our goal is to encourage the love of reading and make this time exciting and rewarding for your child. We will offer puppets, flannel board stories, and interactive games where they will meet new friends and visit with old friends. After a busy summer in the library, we're looking forward to fall & the fall reading programs! Friends of the Omro Library’s Chair Fundraiser 2008 The Friends of the Omro Library is running a fundraiser, which will culminate this October during Oktoberfest in Omro. Earlier this year, the Friends and community members collected chairs and small benches, and brought them to the library. Local artists selected a chair and transformed it into an art object. These works of art are on display in the library, at Flickr, and here on our web site. The City of Omro’s Oktoberfest is October 11th. A silent auction will be held for 1 week, from October 10th until 5pm on October 17, 2008. The highest bidder will be contacted, and may pick up their chair when the auction is completed, at 5pm on October 17, 2008. All money collected on this fundraiser will go to the bank account of the Friends of the Omro Library. Recent purchases made by this group for the library include: children’s books, performer fees for the 2008 summer reading program, a library cart for board books, and CD ROM games. In anticipation of a proposed library expansion, the Friends group is planning to increase their fund-raising activities. Below is a slideshow of photos of all the chairs. Move through the slideshow by clicking the large photo to advance to the next chair; you can click a small photo to see a larger version. If your computer doesn't display the slideshow, you can see an alternate slideshow here, or see individual photos of each chair at our library's Flickr account.Update: photos of 5 more chairs were added to our Flickr account & slideshow on September 11th! Update: 12 more photos were added to our Flick account & slideshow on October 2nd! Update: 4 more photos were added to our Flick account & slideshow on October 6th!
Playaways are the simplest way to listen to a digital audio book. Playaway portable devices come preloaded with one book, and take 1-2 AAA batteries to play. Simply plug in headphones or earbuds and enjoy!
Playaways have a jack that can be used with headphones, portable speakers, FM transmitters, and audio cables to listen in virtually any environment. Playaways are located on the audiobook shelves at the Carter Memorial Library. Here's a list of the Playaways our library owns, as of July 1st:
First In Line!
Sign up for the library's new "First in Line" mailing list to receive email messages as soon as the library orders new novels. The email notification includes both general fiction and mystery novels. The email message includes the title, author and publication date of the novel. If you want to place a reserve on the book, just reply to the email message and include the entire barcode number from the back of your library card. Notices are sent once the book has been ordered by Omro Public Library. Since publication dates vary, it may be a few months before the book arrives at the library and is ready for you to check out. Your privacy will be protected. We have set up the mailing list so no one else will see your email address. If you reply to the message, the reply will only be sent to the library, not the entire list. Note: you will not be overwhelmed with email messages from our list; it won't be a comprehensive list of every novel ordered. To sign up for the "First in Line" mailing list or to ask questions, contact the Reference Desk at 920-685-7016. Six new databases have been added to our library's Research Tools page:
Find Wedding Announcements, Anniversary Notices & Obituaries in Our Local Vital Records Index
Search it now to find... All are welcome to access this free online database through our library's web site. Omro Veterans Memorial Form Organizers of a military veterans memorial in Omro are seeking help in gathering names of those who have served and died for their country. Information on deceased Omro military veterans may be sent to the library, either by printing out & mailing the form in PDF format, or by requesting a print copy of the form from the Omro Public Library. To be eligible for inclusion, the veteran must have resided within the borders of the Omro School District for a least 1 year, and have received an honorable discharge. The Daugherty-Hamilton American Legion Post 234 in Omro is coordinating efforts for the memorial. In April 2006 ground was broken for the memorial at Scott Park in downtown Omro. Copies of all application forms will be archived at our library, for those wishing to learn more about the people whose names are inscribed on the memorial. Details about the memorial are available in this Oshkosh Northwestern newspaper article.
The Friends of the Omro Library would like to extend a THANK YOU to all the generous donors who have given us their old cell phones, empty ink jet and laser cartridges for recycling. Over the last 3½ years those donations have given the Friends group $1672 for the purchase of childrens’ books, audio books, the new children’s board book storage rack and adult books on CD. This recycling project/fund raiser not only helps the library but it helps the environment. If you have these items to donate, they can be brought to the library and deposited in the collection box by the entry door. The Omro Elementary school also has a collection box in the PTO after-school room.
